Introduction Red pandas live in the temperate forest zone of the Himalayan ecosystem between 2200 and 5000 metres (see Chapter 11 ). Their distribution is associated closely with temperate forests having bamboo thickets, which are the main diet of red pandas ( Figure 14.1 ).

Pandas eat a lot of bamboo, even more than their red counterparts. While the diet of a red panda comprises about 95% bamboo, that of panda bears is made of 99% or more. While they can be considered fully vegetarian, if they have to, panda bears might also hunt for small rodents or eat other plants - especially if they do not have access to.

A red panda's body is adapted for feeding on bamboo. Its front legs are shorter than its hind legs, giving it a waddling walk. Its curved claws are semi-retractable. Like the giant panda, the red panda has a false thumb extending from its wrist bone that aids in climbing. The red panda is one of only a few species able to rotate its ankles to.

3.8 % of body weight per feed). The amount to feed is recalculated at 3-4 days intervals based on body weight changes. As the animal ages the percentage of body weight fed per day is gradually reduced, e.g. at about one month old the panda is fed 20-25 % of its body weight per day, at 2 months old 16-18% per day and at 3 months old about 15%.

The amount of biscuit added to the formula is gradually increased until cubs are ready to transition to formula softened biscuits, then to water softened biscuits then to the adult diet of hard biscuits and bamboo. Young red pandas are initially kept in an incubator or warm box at 29.4-32.2 °C (85-90 °F).

Red pandas are nocturnal and often live alone, except during mating season or when they are raising young. Females are only fertile for a couple of days each year, giving red pandas a very short reproduction window. Once pregnant, they gestate for around 130 days and give birth to litters of one to four cubs. The mothers raise their young alone.

It seems to do most of its feeding on the ground. It is nocturnal and may live alone, in pairs, or in family groups. The litters generally contain one or two young that are born in spring after a gestation period of about 130 days. The animal is gentle and easily tamed but usually resents being handled.
